Hon. Dr. Protus Akujah, PhD, Member of Parliament for Loima Constituency, has brought to the attention of Parliament a critical issue affecting grassroots administration in his constituency: the unexplained delay in the appointment of chiefs, despite interviews having been successfully concluded months ago.

Speaking during a recent parliamentary session, Hon. Akujah called on the Ministry of Interior and National Administration to expedite the appointment process, noting that the absence of formally appointed chiefs in several locations within Loima has led to a breakdown in local governance and essential service delivery.

“The people of Loima deserve functioning administrative structures. Chiefs play a central role in security, conflict resolution, and linking the community with national government services,” he stated. “It is unacceptable that, after candidates were interviewed and cleared, their appointments are still pending with no official explanation.”

This statement has resonated with many residents of Turkana, who have long felt neglected by the slow-moving government bureaucracy. The prolonged vacancies have reportedly affected the coordination of government programs, community policing, and management of social services in remote parts of the constituency.

A Voice for the People of Turkana

Hon. Akujah, who holds a PhD and is widely respected for his academic and leadership credentials, was elected with a clear mandate to represent and advocate for the people of Turkana. Since taking office, he has consistently raised issues of governance, development, and equity — particularly for marginalised and arid regions like Loima.

Community leaders and civil society groups have lauded his efforts, stating that they reflect his profound understanding of the region’s challenges and his commitment to transparent and people-centred leadership.

“Dr. Akujah is not just speaking politics; he’s speaking our reality. We need chiefs on the ground. We need leadership that works,” said Esther Nakalale, a community organizer from Loima.

2027 Governorship Race

In what is expected to be one of Turkana’s most watched political contests, Hon. Dr. Protus Akujah has expressed interest in contesting the governorship in 2027.

His bid is seen by many as a natural progression of his leadership journey — from scholar and legislator to potentially the next governor of Turkana County.

Political analysts suggest that his growing popularity, combined with a strong track record in Parliament, positions him as a formidable contender in the race to succeed the current county leadership.

As 2027 approaches, many will be watching to see whether Dr. Akujah’s message of reform, accountability, and grassroots development will resonate beyond Loima — and rally the broader Turkana electorate around his vision for a better, more inclusive county
